Cylinder Head Services

All cylinder head work is done with Genuine Sunnen equipment. With the high precision of Sunnen equipment we can make all valves exactly the same length overall as well as the same length tip to face with the VR-7000! We can also cut all seats to the same depth with the VGS-20, giving uniform stem hieghts when done. This is extremely critical in engines running shaft mounted rockers! Heads work much better when everything is square and the same! We use Sunnen multi angle and radius cutters to cut the valve seats and have a wide selection of cutters to give a truely custom job and not just the run of the mill standard 3 angle cut valve job.

We can setup shaft mounted rocker arm geometry correctly so as to eliminate side movement of the valve as much as possible. Most people think correct rocker arm geometry is getting the rocker arm tip centered on the valve tip at half valve lift, but this is not entirely true! The key to correct rocker arm geometry is the get the roll out pattern throughout the entire valve lifting and closeing motion as narrow as possible so the rocker arm tip is pushing on the valve in the same place the whole time. When the rocker pushes down on the valve in the same spot throughout the entire lift range, the side load on the valve is eliminated. If the rollout pattern is not exactly centerd once this goemetry is obtained, it really doesn't matter since it is still pushing down in the same spot throughout it's travel. Ideally it would be centered but it doesn't always work out that way. Most setups that people think are correct because they are centered will be amazed at just how wide the rollout pattern is! Somtimes it is as much as 1/8-3/16 of an inch wide! This is not good! You really don't want the rocker wiping across the valve tip.

We use a Sunnen HBS-1300 CBN machine to resurface heads. This machine is capable of ultra smooth finishes which are required by todays MLS head gaskets. We surfaced an aluminum head down to an almost mirror like finish of RA 8! MLS gaskets require a smooth finish of RA 20 or less! The smoothest we ever saw from another shop was an RA 17! Nothing like the right equipment for the job!

We also have a SuperFlow 600 head flow bench and do extensive R&D work in head porting! We can port your heads for any use from mild street to all out race.
